PROJECTS
COMPLETED
Client: Deptartment of Transport and Main Roads
Project: The Moreton Bay Rail Link - Koala Translocation and Management Plan

QWES was contracted by Endeavour Veterinary Ecology to provide specialist koala field services during construction of the Moreton Bay Rail Link from Petrie to Kippa-Ring. With the capture, tagging and monitoring of approx. 500 koalas over a period of 5 years, data was used to manage the koalas welfare throughout construction and to assist in translocation when necessary. QWES's team of koala specialists conducted the following activities:

-
Koala survey
-
Koala capture and handling
-
Base station installation and maintenance
-
Koala monitoring
-
Field data collection

A significant infrastructure project recently constructed was the 13km Redcliffe Peninsula Line, the rail corridor passes through areas of koala habitat between Petrie and Kippa-Ring. A koala management program was implemented prior to construction works with the aim of minimising the risk of death or injury to koalas during construction works, to provide scientific data to inform and support mitigation works, and to offset some of the residual impacts of the rail project on the koala population through a holistic package of measures.

Project: Bruce Highway Upgrade (Caloundra Rd to Sunshine Motorway) - Species Management Plan - Frog Management Project

QWES is contracted by Greenleaf Ecology to provide specialist species management during construction of the Bruce Highway section between Caloundra Rd and the Sunshine Motorway at the Sunshine Coast. Due to habitat impacts during construction, several listed frog species such as the Giant Barred Frog (Mixophys iteratus) and the Wallum Froglet (Crinnia tinula) require regular survey for the project's environmental compliance. All areas within the project containing frog habitat are surveyed periodically to determine the presence of all frog species, data on climatic conditions and water quality testing is also conducted.

The first project of its kind within the mining industry, it was widely regarded as a huge success. The following activities were conducted during the project:
-
Manage field operations
-
Pre-clearing fauna survey
-
Wildlife spotter-catching during clearing
-
Significant habitat processing
-
Release site habitat enhancement
-
Threatened species identification
-
Supervise mine site safety compliance

Project: Koala Retrofit and Road Mitigation Project

QWES was contracted by Griffith University to provide specialist koala location, capture and handling services at numerous sites within the Brisbane region in order to monitor resident koala populations. Monitoring data was then used to determine appropriate sites for road crossing infrastructure installation for koalas and wildlife. Services provided by QWES included:
-
Koala survey
-
Koala capture and handling
-
Monitoring team field support
-
Koala habitat and flora identification

Client: Redland Bay Regional Council
Project: Urban Koala Conservation

QWES is contracted by the University of Sunshine Coast to provide specialist koala capture and handling services within the Redland Bay region. Koalas are monitored to collect data on these urban populations to assist in conservation management and community engagement programmes.

Client: Spicers Retreat Hiddenvale
Project: Hiddenvale Koala Monitoring Project

Project: The Mill Koala Management Plan

QWES is contracted by Endeavour Veterinary Ecology to provide specialist koala location, capture and monitoring services for koala management purposes during redevelopment of the old paper mill site at Petrie. The resident population of approx. 90 koalas are actively monitored to minimise the risk of harm during construction and data is used to assist koala conservation management within the area. These koalas are also subjects for Koala Retro-Virus vaccine trials conducted by the University of Sunshine Coast.
Client: Department of Transport and Main Roads
Project: Bruce Highway Upgrade-Cooroy to Curra

QWES is contracted by Endeavour Veterinary Ecology to provide specialist koala location, capture and monitoring services for koala management purposes during construction of the Bruce Highway section from Cooroy to Curra. Koalas within the construction area are monitored during the land clearing phase to minimise the risk of harm and data collected is used to determine an individual's home range and movement patterns. In conjunction with the University of Sunshine Coast, drone thermal imagery is also utilised to locate koalas daily before clearing commences as an added precaution. Koala scats are collected for DNA sampling to research stress related factors associated with exposure to habitat loss and development impacts.
